Our mission

is to study the geopolitical implications of new and emerging technologies for security, democracy, and society. We produce new and original research aimed at advancing theory and evidence-based policymaking, and train the next generation of thought leaders and practitioners.

About Us

New and digital technologies are raising new and complex challenges for human rights, governance, and the security of our society. American University is globally recognized for its world leading scholars shaping international service. We explore the opportunities and challenges of new and emerging technology for policy and governance, with a particular focus on the ways technology is reshaping power, security and human rights around the globe.

The Center for Security, Innovation & New Technology was established in 2020 as an interdisciplinary endeavor to tackle the complex challenges emerging from new and digital technologies. Faculty directors Dr. Samantha Bradshaw, Dr. Trey Herr and Dr. William Akoto, along with our Faculty Fellows, non-Resident Fellows and our Students Fellows draw from diverse disciplines to study these issues and promote policy and governance decisions that create a safe, secure, and trustworthy technological future.
